Cardinal Newman spoke of a \u201csecond spring\u201d as a time of renewal and rejoicing within the Church. Yet, he also warned that spring is often accompanied by fiery and turbulent storms. To overcome challenges and a society increasingly irreligious, Newman advocated for faithful Catholic education. His call for a well-instructed laity is made manifest today at Newman Guide Recommended schools, colleges, and graduate programs. L<span data-teams=\"true\">earn more about the Doctor\u2019s prescription for our secular age.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cardinalnewmansociety.org\/restoring-integrity-in-education\/\">Restoring Integrity in Education<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Cardinal Newman lamented that people tend to focus on knowledge to the exclusion of morality\u2014or conversely, on morality without regard for sound reasoning.\u00a0That\u2019s because each soul is subject to conflicting appeals of intellect, conscience, passion, and appetite. The typical student arrives at school with all these faculties \u201cwarring in his own breast\u201d and each trying \u201cto get possession of him.\u201d Newman\u2019s solution was a faithful Catholic education that would repair the \u201cdis-integrated\u201d human person.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cardinalnewmansociety.org\/cultivating-the-mind\/\">Cultivating the Mind<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Cardinal Avery Dulles was often compared to Cardinal Newman, as they both converted to Catholicism amid strong opposition, both fought against liberalism in religion, and both were elevated to cardinal near the end of their lives in honor of their distinctive contributions to the Church. In this address, Dulles summarizes Newman\u2019s vision for Catholic higher education by outlining the four tendencies Newman found unacceptable.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><\/p><\/div>\n\n<style To prevent such problems, these situations require pastoral sensitivity and the guidance of clear institutional policies that both uphold and explain the obligations of faithful Catholic education.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cardinalnewmansociety.org\/mission-fit-working-with-nontraditional-families\/\"><b>Working with Nontraditional Families<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Disagreement in the Church regarding nontraditional families\u2014the growing variety of home situations beyond a faithfully Catholic family with a married mother and father\u2014may leave schools more vulnerable to discrimination lawsuits and to vilification by the media, politicians and social activists.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cardinalnewmansociety.org\/moral-witness-at-the-heart-of-catholic-education\/\"><b>Moral Expectations for Teachers<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Moral standards should apply to educators in
