Did any of this affect students\u2019 resolve to attend a faithful Catholic college?<\/p>\n<p>That was the question posed to high school seniors competing for scholarships in The Cardinal Newman Society\u2019s annual\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cardinalnewmansociety.org\/the-newman-guide\/essay-scholarship-contest\/\">essay contest<\/a>, and the responses we received give me great hope for the future. Indeed, the events of the past year have made me even more certain of the need for wise and virtuous graduates of faithful Catholic schools and colleges. We rely on them to renew our culture.<\/p>\n<p>Trinity Chester, a homeschooled student in California, writes that the \u201cchallenges of the past year\u201d left her with the conviction that she \u201ccould not possibly settle for anything less\u201d than a faithful Catholic college.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs colleges across the country have shut down or taken classes completely online, faithful Catholic colleges have gone above and beyond to minister to their students in these trying times and keep classes in-person, if at all possible,\u201d Chester reflects in her\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cardinalnewmansociety.org\/faithful-catholic-colleges-help-prepare-next-generation-of-saints\/\">winning essay<\/a>. \u201cThese schools are truly\u00a0<i>almae matres\u00a0<\/i>\u2014 nourishing mothers who care for their children\u2019s physical, emotional, and spiritual welfare.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looks forward to attending a college where \u201cChrist is at the heart\u201d of campus and the education \u201cseeks knowledge of the true, the good and the beautiful.\u201d She believes a liberal arts education is practical, too:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In a post-COVID economy \u2026 graduates will need a holistic education that will equip them for life and give them a versatile skillset. Catholic colleges, with their strong focus on the Liberal Arts, give students the knowledge, critical thinking skills and flexibility to succeed in any venture.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Chester will use her $5,000 scholarship to attend Thomas Aquinas College in Santa Paula, California, where students are being\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomasaquinas.edu\/alumni\">prepared<\/a>\u00a0\u201ceach in their own way \u2026 to live lives of service.\u201d About\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomasaquinas.edu\/alumni\">10 percent<\/a>\u00a0of the College\u2019s alumni have entered the priesthood or religious life, a third of the graduates have gone on to graduate studies or other advanced education, and others have pursued a wide variety of careers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFaithful Catholic colleges equip their students to be missionaries for the faith by carrying Christ with them into the world after graduation,\u201d Chester writes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe events of the past year have taught us that our broken world desperately needs young people with a love for the Lord and a missionary spirit, who will dedicate their lives to service and evangelization,\u201d says Chester.<\/p>\n<p>Praise God for faithful Catholic colleges and for the students who attend them! They are a great light in the darkness of our culture today.
